The contestants were divided into two levels - junior and senior level - but the exam questions were the same with English being the official language both for the foreign contestants and the Vietnamese contestants from 24 provinces and cities.

Le Ngoc Quang, Deputy Director of the Hanoi Education and Training Department, said: “This year’s event drew contestants from 13 countries, four more than last year. And more localities in Vietnam sent students to the event, the furthest localities being Ca Mau, Kien Giang and HCMC. This shows how influential the competition has become domestically and internationally. The event is an opportunity for Vietnamese teachers and students to learn new ways of teaching and learning mathematics.”
