(VOVWORLD) - Hanoi will not set off fireworks on lunar New Year’s Eve this year as the city's daily COVID cases neared 3,000 lately.

Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee Chu Ngoc Anh made the announcement at a meeting on Wednesday. 

Earlier this month, the city scaled down fireworks display for the Lunar New Year’s Eve to a single venue at Thong Nhat Park.

During New Year’s Eve more than half a month ago the city also decided to stop letting off fireworks and organizing cultural events, including a countdown party, due to the complex nature of the COVID-19 outbreak.
