Gotabaya Rajapaksa elected President of Sri Lanka

(VOVWORLD) - Opposition candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa won with more than 52% of the vote, according to the official Presidential election results announced by the Sri Lankan Election Commission.

Rajapaksa's main opponent, the current Minister of Housing and the candidate of the ruling United National Party (UNP), received 42%. Rajapaksa was sworn in as Sri Lanka’s president on Monday.

Rajapaksa, formerly Sri Lanka’s Defense Minister, ran a campaign pledging to ensure security and fight religious extremism in the Buddhist-majority country. Multiple terrorist attacks on churches and hotels in Sri Lanka in April killed 258 people.
