In the communiqué, G7 leaders emphasized the need to maintain a rules-based order in the maritime domain on the basis of international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. They said that they are concerned by tensions in the East Seas and underlined the importance of peaceful dispute settlement as well as free and unimpeded lawful use of the world’s oceans. The leaders also affirmed that they strongly oppose the “use of intimidation, coercion or force, as well as any unilateral actions that seek to change the status quo, such as large-scale land reclamation”.
