(VOVWORLD) - At Saturday’s meeting on the sidelines of the ongoing Munich Security Conference in Bayern, Group of Seven foreign ministers reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ukraine ahead of the one-year anniversary of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

The meeting was the first in-person foreign ministerial talks chaired by Japan since it assumed this year’s rotating G7 presidency.

According to a statement of the Japanese Foreign Ministry, G7 members convening the meeting demonstrated solidarity with Ukraine. It said ministers from Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the US, plus the European Union, will continue to impose a raft of economic sanctions on Russia to pressure it to end the special military operation in Ukraine.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba will join part of the meeting at the invitation of his Japanese counterpart, Yoshimasa Hayashi, the ministry said.

The G7 diplomats will also discuss the situation in the Indo-Pacific region and North Korea's nuclear and missile programs.

Japanese Foreign Minister Hayashi will likely have a private meeting with Wang Yi, Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, who represents China to Munich Security Conference.

The G7 countries also plan to hold an online meeting of their leaders on Friday, on the first anniversary of the start of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
