G7 countries commit 7.5 billion USD to Covax vaccine funding

(VOVWORLD) - United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, speaking at the Munich Security Conference on Friday, called on major G20 economies including the US, China and India to set up an emergency taskforce to at least double global manufacturing capacity including through sharing of licenses and technology transfers.

Mr. Guterres’ call come as some Western countries, including the UK and France, have pledged in recent days to speed up distributing vaccines to developing countries.  The US on Thursday announced it would contribute 4 billion USD to Covax, an initiative by the World Health Organization to distribute vaccines to poor countries.

On the same day, at the G7 Online Summit chaired by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, G7 leaders pledged to strengthen cooperation in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. They pledged 7.5 billion USD to Covax.
