“Today, we take the responsibility of opening a path to peace. Since last July, events have taken a grave turn, placing upon us a historic mission—to realize a two-state solution, where Israel and Palestine coexist in peace and security,” said President Macron, adding, “Now it’s time for concrete action toward peace between the Israeli and Palestinian peoples. I therefore announce that France officially recognizes the state of Palestine.”
The Palestinian Foreign Ministry welcomed France’s recognition of the state of Palestine, calling it a “historic and courageous decision” that “supports efforts to achieve peace and implement a two-state solution”.
Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan urged all countries to follow this example and recognize the State of Palestine.
The White House said Monday that President Donald Trump believes recognition of a Palestinian state by US allies is effectively rewarding Hamas for its attack on Israel.
Earlier the UK, Canada, Australia, and Portugal announced their recognition of a Palestinian state, marking an important step in the Middle East peace process.
In a statement Monday, UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said she has warned Israel not to annex parts of the West Bank in retaliation for the UK's recognition of Palestinian statehood.
