Former Prime Minister Phan Van Khai dies, aged 85

(VOVWORLD) -Former Politburo member and former Prime Minister Phan Van Khai passed away at 1:30am on Saturday in Cu Chi district, Ho Chi Minh city, at the age of 85.

Mr Khai was born on December 25, 1933 in Cu Chi district. As one of the high-ranking Party and State leaders in the first phase of the country's Doi Moi (renewal) process, PM Khai was active and determined to build the institution under the spirit of renewal to fully tap the capacity of all economic sectors, especially the private sector, together with opening door to the world and integrating internationally. The Government led by PM Khai left its marks by the issuance of the Business Law, the annulment of hundreds of licenses, the involvement in many tough talks to negotiate on Vietnam's admission to the World Trade Organization (WTO), and more.

“PM Khai is a shining example of a resolute and straightforward leader. He boasts all the qualifications required for a leader: industriousness, thrift, integrity, uprightness and selflessness,” said Luu Binh Nhuong, permanent member of the National Assembly’s Committee for Social Affairs.

“PM Khai contributed significantly to expanding Vietnam’s external relations, particularly with the US. During his terms, Vietnam restored relations with international organizations like the World Bank, the IMF and the ADB,” said Tran Duc Nguyen, former assistant to PM Khai.

The Party and State presented PM Khai the Golden Star Order in recognition of his dedications to the country's revolutionary cause.

A state funeral will be held for Mr Khai. The memorial service will take place from 8am on March 20 till the end of March 21 at Reunification Hall in HCM city. He will be buried at 11am on March 22 in his home town. The memorial and funeral services will be broadcast live on Vietnam Television and the Voice of Vietnam. During 2 days of national mourning, March 20 and 21, 2018, flags on state buildings and public places will be lowered to half-staff and all entertainment activities postponed.
