Five new judges elected to International Court of Justice

(VOVWORLD) - The United Nations General Assembly and Security Council on Thursday elected five judges to serve at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The new judges are Yuji Iwasawa of Japan, Georg Nolte of Germany, Xue Hanqin of China, Peter Tomka of Slovakia and Julia Sebutinde of Uganda. They will each serve a nine-year term commencing February 6, 2021.

Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of the Vietnamese Mission to the UN, cast his vote at the UN Security Council, while Ambassador Pham Hai Anh, deputy head of the mission, voted at the UN General Assembly. This is the second time Vietnam has helped elect ICJ judges. The first time was in 2008.
