First candidates announce for US House Speaker race

(VOVWORLD) - The race to replace ousted House Speaker Kevin McCarthy took shape on Wednesday as Steve Scalise, the chamber’s No.2 Republican, and Jim Jordan, a leading antagonist of Democratic President Joe Biden, said they would seek the post.

The information was released by Republican lawmakers after a closed meeting on Wednesday.

Analysts predict that there will be more Republican candidates in the race including congressman Tom Emmer, currently the No.3 Republican figure in the House of Representatives, congressman Patrick McHenry, who was just appointed as interim House Speaker; congressman Tom Cole, Chairman of the House Rules Committee, and congresswoman Elise Stefanik, the only female congresswoman in the leadership of the Republican Party.

The Republican Party set next Wednesday to vote to choose a successor to Kevin McCarthy, who, on Tuesday, became the first House Speaker in history to be dismissed.
