Vietnam sent 78 athletes, including 27 female players, to the tournament which is part of the competition system of the Badminton World Federation (BWF).
Local players had the chance to sharpen their skills through competition against strong rivals from Australia, Brunei, China, France, India, Japan, Singapore, and Thailand.
On the first competition day, leading Vietnamese badminton player Nguyen Tien Minh defeated Teh Jin Hong of Malaysia 2-0 in the men’s singles, whilst Marhanif Ali of Brunei lost to 2-1 to Minh’s teammate Pham Dinh Nguyen Quang.
In the mixed couple event, Hoang Anh Minh/Luong Nguyen Khanh Ngoc trounced their Malaysian rivals with a 2-0 win.
Le Hoang Dat/Phan Thanh Binh gained a 2-1 victory over Christoffer Jonathan/Michael Michael of Indonesia. Bich Phuong and her teammates Phuong Thuy, Thu Huyen all won three matches in the qualifying round of the women’s singles category.
The tournament is scheduled to last until Sunday.
