WHO Europe director Hans Kluge said Sunday that it is plausible that Europe is moving towards a kind of pandemic endgame, adding that Omicron could infect 60% of Europeans by March.
Kluge also said that once the current surge of Omicron sweeping across Europe subsides, there will be a global immunity for some weeks or months, either thanks to the vaccine or because people have immunity due to the infection, and also lowering seasonality.
He anticipated that there will be a period of quiet before COVID-19 may come back towards the end of the year, but it’s not necessarily the pandemic coming back.
The WHO still warns countries to be cautious because other variants may appear after the Omicron variant.
