(VOVWORLD) - EU officials said the EU and Britain reached a tentative agreement on defence and security, fisheries and youth mobility ahead of an EU-UK summit on Monday, seen as paving the way for British firms to participate in large EU defence contracts.

Representatives of EU governments in Brussels received a text of a Common Understanding between Britain and the EU and the document is now being approved by all 27 EU governments, the officials said.

The UK Prime Minister on Monday confirmed a new agreement with the European Union which will deliver on his core mission to grow the economy, back British jobs and put more money in people’s pockets, his government said in a statement.

On social media platform X, Prime Minister Keir Starmer wrote “It’s time to look forward. To move on from the stale old debates and political fights to find common sense, practical solutions which get the best for the British people.”

One of the key elements of the UK-EU agreement is to allow British defense companies to participate in a 167 billion-USD program to rearm Europe.
