The Commission stuck to its position that the crisis is an internal matter for Spain and called for dialogue.
Spain’s government on Wednesday rejected calls by the leader of Catalonia for mediation of its demands for independence. A statement from Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s office said there will be no talks until Catalan President Carles Puigdemont abandons the independence campaign, which Madrid calls illegal. He said if Mr. Puigdemont wants talks or mediation with the central Government about Catalonia’s future, he first needs to respect the law.
