Some countries have warned that disagreement over this issue should not affect other trade negotiations.

German Minister of State for Europe Michael Roth said France's diplomatic crisis with the US was a "wake-up call for all of us" on the importance of uniting an often divided EU on foreign policy.

The US has expressed hope to ease tensions with France. President Joe Biden is scheduled for a call with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron in the next few days.
