EU ministers convene in Ukraine to show support

(VOVWORLD) - EU foreign ministers held their first ever meeting outside the bloc in Ukraine on Monday, a show of support for the country after the US Congress omitted funding for Kyiv from a spending bill.

"We are convening a historic meeting of EU Foreign Ministers here in Ukraine, candidate country and future member of the EU," Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy said on X. "We are here to express our solidarity and support to the Ukrainian people."

US President Joe Biden said on Sunday that US Democrats and Republicans have agreed to provide support to Ukraine, despite the removal of aid to Ukraine from a government spending bill to prevent a government shutdown. Biden said the US remains committed to supporting Ukraine and called on Republicans to stop playing political games.

Borrell said Sunday that Ukraine needs additional military aid, and that EU will continue to provide support and long-term security commitments to Ukraine. He told a news conference in Kyiv that he hoped member states would reach a decision on increasing aid “before the end of the year”.
