The Ministry’s statement said Moscow decided to downgrade diplomatic relations with Estonia to the level of Chargé d'affaires. Earlier this month, the Estonian Foreign Ministry asked Moscow to reduce the number of diplomatic staff at the Russian Embassy in Tallinn starting February1.

Following Estonia, the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it had downgraded its diplomatic relations with Russia to chargé d'affaires and required the Russian Ambassador to leave Latvia before February 24.

Latvia’s Ambassador will also leave Russia before February 24. According to Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics, Latvia's move is intended to show solidarity with Estonia as well as protest against Russia's special military operation in Ukraine.
