Frederik X ascended the Danish throne following his mother Queen Margrethe's abdication after 52 years as monarch.

Earlier in the day, Queen Margrethe signed a declaration of abdication in favor of her son Frederik. Thousands of people gathered in the square outside the palace where the royal succession took place.

Margrethe, 83, became the first Danish monarch to voluntarily relinquish the throne in nearly 900 years.
