COVID-19 worldwide death toll tops 170,000

(VOVWORLD) - The coronavirus has infected 2.5 million people worldwide and killed more than 170,000, according to Johns Hopkins University. 

Despite 63,000 new infections and more than 5,000 deaths in the past 24 hours, the world is beginning to see some signs that the fight against COVID-19 is having some success.

In the US, approximately 42,500 have died and more than 790,000 have contracted COVID-19. As of Tuesday, 72,000 patients have fully recovered.

The fight against COVID-19 in Europe continues to see promising signs. The number of deaths per day in Spain dropped below 400 for the first time in weeks. The number of new infections was just 1,536. Italy recorded 2,256 new cases, bringing the total number of cases to 181,228.

In France, the total number of COVID-19 cases to date is 155,384, an increase of 25,000. The number of deaths is 20,265, an increase of 547. France now has the highest number of COVID-19 deaths in Europe.
