The coronavirus death toll in the US topped 55,000 as of Monday, out of more than 980,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19. The world’s second worst-hit country is Spain, with more than 226,000 confirmed cases and more than 23,000 deaths.
The curve appears to be flattening in previous COVID-19 epicenters in Europe. Italy recorded 260 new coronavirus deaths on Sunday, its smallest increase since March 15. On Sunday, France reported 242 deaths in 24 hours, a drop of more than a third from the previous day, and its fewest coronavirus deaths in five weeks.
