Covid-19 continues to spread

(VOVWORLD) - The National Health Commission of China said Tuesday that additional Covid-19 cases were confirmed on Monday, bringing the total number of infections in mainland China to more than 80,700, with more than 3,100 deaths.

More than 111,500 people have gotten Covid-19 and there have been more than 3,800 fatalities. 700 deaths have been confirmed outside mainland China.

Italy has confirmed 9,100 infections and 460 deaths.

Italian authorities have announced that draconian measures will be applied across the country by a decree that will take effect on Tuesday. Large swaths of the north will be locked down. Italy is also considering prolonging the closure of schools until April 3, and major sporting events like the Serie A football games will be postponed.

In the US, three cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed in Iowa. So far more than 500 Covid-19 cases have been recorded in the country, with 21 deaths.

The first case of coronavirus has been detected among the staff of the European Commission, a spokeswoman said on Monday. A woman who works for the Commission returned from Italy and has been in quarantine since last week.

The European Parliament has moved a plenary session scheduled for next week in Strasbourg, France, to Brussels because of concerns about the coronavirus. It is now discussing whether to cancel the meeting altogether.

South Korea confirmed more than 160 new cases on Tuesday, bringing its total Covid-19 cases to more than 7,400.

Japan announced a total of more than 1,200 cases, while Iran confirmed more than 7,100 cases with more than 200 deaths. The epidemic has spread to 31 cities and provinces in Iran, making Iran the second biggest epicenter after mainland China.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has declared a public health emergency in the Philippines which has confirmed 20 Covid-19 cases.

Malaysia reported 18 new cases on Monday, bringing Malaysia’s total to 117.

Indonesia confirmed 19 people infected with Covid-19 on Monday. India announced 43 cases. A number of conferences and festivals in India have been canceled due to the epidemic.
