(VOVworld) - The Confederation of ASEAN Journalists (CAJ) has hosted a 2-day international conference in Palembang, South Sumatra, Indonesia, to promote the media’s contributions to building the ASEAN Community by 2015. Entitled “Bringing ASEAN closer to the people’s hearts and minds”, the just-concluded event discussed recent challenges the media has been facing and the role of journalism in promoting regional stability, development, and peace. Journalists touched upon the media’s role in enhancing ASEAN security, the relationship between the media and elections, social and traditional media, the media and the ASEAN free trade area, and community access to culture.

The conference included exhibitions featuring “Indonesia’s Press from era to era” and the construction of the Center for ASEAN Journalism Education and Training (CAJET) in Palembang which was initiated by the Indonesian Journalists Association (PWI) and approved by the CAJ last November in Manila, the Philippines.
