Coal use in 2022 reaches record high

(VOVWORLD) - Global coal use will reach a new record this year due to high demand, said International Energy Agency (IEA).

With an 1.2 % increase in 2022, coal use reached to 8 billion tons, the highest ever, IEA reported. The agency also noted that coals will continue to be the biggest culprit for CO2 emission, and its use will remain stable in the coming years if there is no breakthrough in the transition to green energy.

Natural gas’s price increase coincides with the current dependency on coals, according to IEA. However, the world needs to cut down fossil fuel use to cap global warming at 1,5 degrees Celsius this century. Experts said the ambitious goals on climate change of the Paris Agreement will be difficult to achieve as global average temperature has increased by 1,2 degrees Celsius since the post-industrial era.
