The announcement followed an earlier agreement between the Israeli Government and Hamas militant group for a four-day ceasefire after six weeks of conflict, in exchange for the release of 50 women and children held in Gaza, who were captured in Hamas’ first attack on October 7. The agreement will come into effect within the next 24 hours, and was mediated by Qatar, the US, and Egypt. As part of the deal, Israel will release 150 Palestinian women and children held in the country’s jails, Hamas said in a statement, adding that the truce will allow more humanitarian aid from Sinai, Egypt to enter the besieged enclave through the Rafah crossing.

The truce has been welcomed regionally and internationally. Countries and international organizations urged all parties “to ensure the agreement is delivered in full”, and to consider extending the ceasefire.
