Local police sources said two car bomb attacks occurred in the Sunni neighborhood of Dura, in south Baghdad, killing 6 people and injuring 15, while three bombs were detonated in the mostly-Shiite neighborhoods of Jadidah, Hurriyah, and Bayaa. No group claimed responsibility for Monday’s bombings, but Sunni militants linked to the Al Qaeda network frequently set off coordinated bombings on civilian targets in Baghdad.
The attacks were the latest in a protracted surge of violence that has left more than 650 people dead so far this month, sparking fears that Iraq is slipping back into the all-out conflict that plagued it in 2006 and 2007. The UN said nearly 8,900 people were killed in 2013, of which more than 7,800 were civilians and security officials. This is the highest number of casualties in many years.
