The Good Friday Agreement was signed on April 10, 1998 between the government of the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom, and the parties in Northern Ireland to bring peace to Ireland, ending one of the most serious conflicts in Europe in the 20th century, which left more than 3,600 people dead. However, controversy over the UK’s departure from the European Union (EU), known as Brexit, has complicated Northern Ireland’s border arrangements.
In a statement, Prime Minister Sunak celebrated the "difficult decisions" taken and "political imagination" displayed to end the three decade conflict known as the Troubles.
Marking the milestone anniversary, Sunak emphasized that now is the time to look back and welcome the progress made since the signing of the agreement, but also the time to double efforts.
He affirmed that the UK is ready to work with the Irish Government and parties in Northern Ireland to ensure that the institutions in this territory are back up and running as soon as possible.
