(VOVWORLD) - Australia will continue to work with China to protect local producers, but is considering asking the World Trade Organization to look at China’s barley tariffs after China's suddenly slapped a tariff of up to 80% on Australian barley.

The Australian news on Wednesday quoted Agriculture Minister David Littleproud as saying commercial and agricultural representatives are negotiating with China to resolve the problem. If they fail during the 60-day window, Australia will lodge an appeal with the WTO.

According to the ABC, Australia's Foreign Minister Marise Payne says Australia is committed to standards for exported commodities and insists on protecting its national interests. She said she would be disappointed if China’s tariff is a retaliation for Australia’s forthright call for a global Covid-19 investigation.
