In a statement, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Chairperson of the AU Commission, underlined that a civilian-led and consensual transition would not only be consistent with the legitimate aspirations of the people of Burkina Faso for change and the deepening of democracy, but would also facilitate the mobilization of the support necessary for a successful way out of the crisis. Ms. Dlamini-Zuma also called on young people in Burkina Faso to keep calm and urged army leaders and security forces to avoid any action that can worsen the situation.
The AU’s Peace and Security Council is expected to hold a meeting on Monday to discuss the situation in Burkina Faso.
