ASEAN, Australia uphold rule of law for security and safety in the East Sea

(VOVWORLD) - ASEAN and Australian Defense Ministers met informally on Wednesday in the framework of the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting Retreat. Delegates welcomed Australia’s defense cooperation vision document as a foundation for future defense ties.

Addressing the meeting, Deputy Defense Minister Hoang Xuan Chien hailed the importance of the ASEAN-Australia ties towards comprehensive strategic partnership. He praised the role of the ASEAN to ensure the international law in regional safety and security, including the East Sea, as well as further comprehensive cooperation. He applauded the Australian participation in the ADMM+ and other practical cooperative activities to overcome the pandemic consequences.

The Deputy Minister thanked Australia’s support for the ASEAN and Vietnam in pandemic control efforts.

The same day, Cambodia took over from Brunei the chairmanship of the ADMM and ADMM+ next year.
