The 76th UN General Assembly is scheduled to elect 34 members of the ILC for the term 2023-2027 at UN headquarters in New York on Friday.
Ambassador Thao is one of 11 candidates who will run for eight seats representing the Asia-Pacific region at ILC in the new term. The remaining 10 Asian candidates are from Japan, China, the Republic of Korea, Thailand, Cyprus, India, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Mongolia and Lebanon. Elsewhere 37 candidates will vie for 26 other seats representing Africa, East Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and West Europe.
Vietnam officially announced the re-nomination of Thao, a veteran diplomat and an expert in international law, to the ILC on February 25, 2021.
Thao graduated with a Doctor of Law degree from Paris I School, Sorbonne University of France, and held important positions such as Vice Chairman of the National Border Commission and Head of the delegation to negotiate border agreements with neighboring countries of Vietnam.
