The Taliban were threatening on Tuesday to capture the three key districts. Fierce fighting with government forces has stoked fears of Islamist insurgent gains in their traditional heartland. The Taliban fight to control Helmand echoes the build-up to September's attack on the northern city of Kunduz.
Afghanistan has plunged into chaos since late 2014 when foreign forces led by the US concluded their mission. The US now maintains just 13,000 personnel to train Afghanistan troops to fight terrorism.
