German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock was sworn in as the President of the session. At 44, she’s one of the youngest ever to hold the position.
UNGA-80 will run until September 8, 2026, aiming to promote international solidarity, strengthen multilateralism, and advance peace, security, development, and human rights.
A High-Level Week will begin on September 22 and run through September 30, bringing together heads of state, government leaders, and senior officials from all 193 UN member states.
This session coincides with the 80th anniversary of the UN and comes at a time when the international community is grappling with a host of both traditional and emerging challenges.
Observers expect the 80th General Assembly, as the UN’s main policymaking body, will help drive institutional reforms towards greater agility, efficiency, transparency, and responsiveness to global needs.
