In late 1967, the US and the Vietnamese puppet regime were forced to switch back to defense of key areas, including the defense line of Route 9-Khe Sanh to block Vietnam's strategic supply routes from the north to the southern battlefield.
After 170 days and nights of arduous fighting, on July 9, 1968, the Road 9-Khe Sanh Campaign of the Vietnamese army and people ended successfully. It broke the US strategic defense line, maintained the supply route from North to South and completely liberated Huong Hoa district with more than 10,000 people. Huong Hoa became the first district in southern Vietnam to be liberated.
