Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Hong Phuong, seismic expert at the Institute of Geophysics, said the initial cause was a tectonic earthquake, caused by a natural fault zone. My Duc is located only about 1.8 km from the Red River fault zone - the source of earthquakes, running across the boundary of Hanoi City.
At about 4 a.m. on Monday, two earthquakes of magnitude 3.2 and 3.7 occurred in Kon Plong district, Kon Tum province. Kon Plong has seen frequent earthquakes since 2021 with the highest magnitude earthquake reported at 4.7, occurring on August 23 afternoon, 2022.
