The attack occurred when a roadside bomb went off a crowded coffee shop in the town of Maqdadiyah, some 100 km northeast of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad. Afterwards, a booby-trapped car detonated at the scene of the first blast, destroying part of the building and several nearby shops. The same day, the jihadist group IS claimed its attack on a Baghdad shopping centre, which reportedly killed at least 12 people. In an online statement, the IS said its four members conducted the attack, leaving 90 people dead and wounded.
