(VOVWORLD) - Armed assailants, including some disguised as women, stunned Iran on Wednesday with brazen attacks on the Parliament building and the tomb of its revolutionary founder Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

At least 13 people were killed and 43 were wounded in the near-simultaneous assaults, which lasted several hours. The official news media said six known attackers were also killed and five suspects were reported detained. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.

The world community strongly condemned the attack. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called on the world community to work together in the fight against terrorism. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said a series of attacks in Iran shows the unprecedented outbreak of international terrorism. The United Arab Emirates criticized the attacks.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres strongly denounced the assaults and called on the world community to unite in the war against terrorism. US President Donald Trump expressed his sympathy toward the victims. Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said the assaults on the month of Ramadan have offended religious spirit.
