The concert took place at the National Academy of Music in Hanoi on December 21. The children were rehearsed and directed by musical director Nguyen Hai Yen. This was the first performance of the choral group dubbed the “Green Wind” (Gio Xanh). Ms. Yen told the audience the group’s aim is to bring people together in a spirit of sharing and love. Although most of the singers were children, some as young as 5 or 6, the group include some singers as old as 80. The audience, likewise, ranged in age from toddlers to grandparents. Singers Dong Hung, Thu Trang and Duy Phuc performed as guest artists. Flautist Dinh Quang Vu, a graduate of the National Academy of Music, also performed. Many of the performers were students from centers for the protection of orphaned, homeless, or displaced children. The program of heart-lifting songs included “Believe”, “You raise me up”, “and “Follow the drinking gourds”. The group’s performance of “Silent Night”, in which the lights were dimmed and the singers sang, each holding a lighted candle.
