(VOVWORLD) - December is when “So” flower or camellia oleifera is in full bloom in the mountainous district of Binh Lieu in the northeastern province of Quang Ninh. The scenery around hills and roads are covered in white camellia oleifera and are a magnet for  nature-lovers.

Located more than 100 kilometers from Ha Long city, Binh Lieu, a mountainous border district of Quang Ninh province, has become famous for its vast yellow rice fields in October and November and its white carpets of camellia oleifera in December.

All roads leading to Binh Lieu hamlets are covered in the white camellia oleifera which gives off a light fragrance. This flower is at its best during winter, especially in December.

Visitors might mistake camellia oleifera with tea tree flowers. However, camellia oleifera is bigger with a pure white color and light fragrance.

Camellia oleifera is grown on every hill and garden in Binh Lieu, along with other fruit trees. The flower’s seeds are used to make oil.

Since 2015, the Camellia Oleifera Flower Festival has become an annual tourist event in Quang Ninh province.

The 2020 Camellia Oleifera Flower Festival is organized at Dong Long hamlet in Dong Tam commune where camellia oleifera is said to be the most beautiful in the region.

Ethnic peoples of Tay, Dao Thanh Y, Dao Thanh Phan, and San ChI put on their beautiful and colorful ethnic costumes to attend the festival in Binh Lieu.

The flower festival is unique to Quang Ninh province’s border areas, featuring the local people’s diverse cultural identities.

The 2020 Camellia Oleifera Flower Festival attracted many visitors.

Tran Thi Thanh Mai, a visitor from Hanoi, said, "Binh Lieu is considered ‘Little Sapa’ in the heart of Quang Ninh province with a gentle climate, poetic nature and white camellia oleifera. The local people are also very friendly. I borrowed the local ethnic costumes for some photo sessions. The flower scent is very relaxing. This will be a memorable experience for me.”

Nguyen Thi Hoa – a student of Ha Long University said, "The scenery is so beautiful. I had many great photos taken here. I’ll visit Binh Lieu more frequently".
