(VOVWORLD) -Bay Mau Coconut Forest,  described by some as a “miniature Mekong Delta”, is a bit of lush greenery nestled in the ancient town of Hoi An along the Hoai, Thu Bon, and De Vong river.

Hoi An, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site famous for its quaint streets and shimmering lanterns hides a unique “green gem” – the Bay Mau Coconut Forest, more formally known as the Cam Thanh Coconut Forest Ecotourism Area.

The palm fronds and refreshing breezes of this little forest, about 4 kilometers from the city center, evoke the charm of the watery Mekong Delta.

The Cam Thanh Coconut Forest was planted 200 years ago, when settlers from the Mekong Delta brought nipa palm seedlings to plant. Thanks to favorable soil, water, and climate, the trees flourished into a forest spanning about 7 hectares. The name “Bay Mau Coconut Forest” refers to the forest’s original size, but it has now grown considerably bigger.

The Bay Mau Coconut Forest served as a revolutionary base during the French and American resistance wars. The forest’s dense palm groves sheltered and protected Vietnamese guerrilla fighters for many years.

Today, the forest has become a famous ecotourism destination, attracting visitors with basket boat rides through the lush palms.

The blossoms and fruits of the nipa palms are turned into food, drinks, and other products for the growing numbers of tourists.

The best time to visit is during the dry season from January to September. During this period, Hoi An has lots of sunshine, but the forest stays pleasantly cool and comfortable.

The highlight for many visitors is the “basket boat dance”.

As the performance begins, lively music and the cheering and clapping of visitors creates a boisterous atmosphere that contrasts with the usual tranquility of the forest.

The eager eyes of young visitors as they witness the “basket dance” performance firsthand, just like an artistic circus act.

Bay Mau Coconut Forest is not only a place for boat rowing and basket dancing. It is where the beauty of nature harmonizes with the warmth of the people. It's a place where nature and human conviviality meet. Every stroke of the oar, every smile of the boatmen, every palm leaf becomes a piece of a colorful painting where peace, simplicity, and unforgettable memories blend together.
