B: This week, we had a grand celebration of National Day, September 2, on Tuesday, drawing great interest from local residents and foreign visitors.

Let's hear what foreigners in Vietnam have shared about their impressions of the festive atmosphere during this week's National Day celebrations.

“I think it's amazing to walk around the streets, I see so many flags and so many people happy and celebrating, kids too, and older people. It shows me how much Vietnamese people love their country.”

“I saw some helicopters and I was very impressed by that. Everyone is wearing white and red, which is super nice. It shows the collective unification of the country, which is really nice.”

“We feel really good here in Vietnam. We saw a lot of decorations, and I think it's good to show tourists your history. It's really exciting and really good to have this celebration.”

I think its really exciting. Everybody seems really friendly and happy, so I think theyre all looking forward to the celebration. Ive never been to Vietnam before. I just feel people are really happy at this moment.”

The foreign visitors have been impressed by the scale of the celebrations with solemn parades and the festive atmosphere on the streets, as well as the cultural depth and spirit of the Vietnamese people.

Rajesh Ananda is a tourist from Singapore:  “I think it was the music. It gives you a sense of how much people feel it, and you feel it inside because of the music and everyone wearing the colors. It’s the ambiance, basically the music, the way people behave, and the flags everywhere. The flags, the colors, and definitely the music are the things that impress the most when you’re here on these days.”

A: The festive atmosphere remains as VOV is celebrating its 80th founding anniversary this week and stories about VOV’s history and development will continue to be shared on our shortwave broadcasts and our website at vovworld.vn and Facebook fanpage VOV5 English Service. We hope that you enjoy them.

B: Among many questions that listeners asked about Vietnam this week, we picked one from Chanthima of Cambodia who wants to know more about Vietnam’s coconuts.

A: Thanks for your interest, Chanthima. In Vietnam, coconut is grown widely from North to South. Particularly, Ben Tre province in the Mekong River Delta, which is known as the land of coconuts or the land of three green coconut islands.

B: In Ben Tre, everything that comes from coconut trees, including the trunk, the leaves, hard-shells, the fiber – even coconut worm larvae - can be used in cooking or made into something for export.

A: All parts of the coconut are useful. The tree-trunk is used to make fine art pieces. Coconut flesh is for candies while the hard shell is used to make char coal. Coconut juice is for making coconut jelly. When coconuts turn browner and lighter, the flesh is used to make coconut oil or food for fish.

B: Coconut tree trunks are also the main wood used to build houses, make beds, and make household goods, because they are strong and not inferior to other woods.

A: Coconut shells are raw materials for making many kinds of handicrafts. Currently, coconut trees are exploited very thoroughly, contributing to increasing income, improving people’s lives, and creating jobs for workers in Ben Tre.

B: Vietnam's total exports of all coconut products amounted to nearly 1.1 billion USD last year. With over 600 companies engaged in production and processing, Vietnam's coconut industry holds a competitive edge in the international market. The country ranks 4th in coconut exports in the Asia-Pacific region and 5th globally. Vietnamese coconut products are available in China, the European Union, the United States, Canada, and South Korea.
