Vietnam’s contributions to world peacekeeping activities

(VOVWORLD) - The Vietnamese Ministry of Defense has implemented the President’s decision to send a second Vietnamese military officer to work at the UN headquarters in New York and reviewed the performance of 9 Vietnamese officers who completed mission at the UN peacekeeping operations in South Sudan and the Central African Republic whose efforts have helped raise Vietnam’s international status.

The new officer posted to UN headquarters had to pass multiple examinations and beat out 150-200 candidates for the job. Vietnam’s participation in UN peacekeeping operations is part of the Party and State’s comprehensive integration into the world.

Vietnam recently welcomed back 9 officers who worked in South Sudan and the Central African Republic performing peacekeeping and COVID-19 response activities.

In the last five years, Vietnam has sent 40 officers to international missions in the Central African Republic, South Sudan, and the UN headquarters, has set up a Level-2 field hospital (No 2) staffed by 63 cadres and health workers in South Sudan and prepared to set up another send a Level-2 Field Hospital (No 3) requested by the UN. Vietnam’s contributions to UN peacekeeping activities have been acknowledged by the international community, UN organizations, and international and non-governmental organizations in the host countries. Vietnamese officers have been praised for their professionalism, disciplines, dependability, and adaptability. The UN selected Vietnam as the first training center for international peacekeeping activities in Southeast Asia

Vietnam’s National Assembly adopted a resolution on Participation in UN Peacekeeping Missions four months ago demonstrating that Vietnam is a responsible member of the international community and is committed to UN peacekeeping activities.

Vietnam wants to improve its capacity to contribute professionally to UN peacekeeping missions. Vietnam considers UN peacekeeping activities to be more appropriate work for the army with a clear aim of preserving peace. Vietnam wants to send peacekeeping officers to other countries outside South Sudan and Central Africa.

Vietnam’s active participation in UN peacekeeping operations embodies the Party and State’s foreign policy of multilateralisation and diversification of external relations, independence, self-reliance, and respect for the UN’s goals and principles, thereby contributing to the building of a sustainable peace.
