Realizing the world’s shared goals

Vietnam’s natural forests have shrunk and many rare species have declined sharply, according to a report of the Biodiversity Conservation Agency of the Environment Administration.

Considering the conservation of biodiversity is a job of vital importance to the world, Vietnam has worked out several mechanisms and implemented strategies, programs, and projects to conserve and sustainably exploit biodiversity, restore degraded forest, ocean, and mangrove ecosystems, and effectively protect species and genes.

Doctor Nguyen Van Tai, Director General of the Environment Administration, said, 'Vietnam’s biodiversity is part the world’s biodiversity. We need to enhance cooperation between countries and engage international organizations, the public, administrations, scientists, and other stakeholders in conserving biodiversity. Cooperation between ministries and sectors and between central and local agencies should also be strengthened.'

Ecosystem restoration accelerated

Based on guidelines of the Convention on Biodiversity to which Vietnam is a signatory, Vietnam has set up management agencies and developed policies and legal mechanisms concerning biodiversity. A system of nature reserves has been set up and endangered species have been protected by law and through action programs. Public awareness of the importance and role of biodiversity in people’s lives and in sustainable development is increasing.

In 2021, the UN begins a decade of Ecosystem Restoration. Vietnam has mapped out a National Strategy on Biodiversity till 2030 and Orientation to 2040 aiming to build a coordinated legal system for conservation of nature and biodiversity.

Hoang Thi Thanh Nhan, Deputy Director of the Biodiversity Conservation Agency, said, 'We will study the 2030 global framework on biodiversity and specify prompt actions based on Vietnam’s conditions. By conserving its biodiversity and natural values, Vietnam is contributing to the global effort.'
