(VOVworld) – The ceasefire brokered by Russia and the US has taken effect for one week in Syria’s battle fields. But the months-long efforts by Moscow and Washington are hurt, as the situation in the Middle East country is deteriorating, particularly in Aleppo and Hama.

The truce in Syria took effect from 19hours (local time) on September 12. 5 days later, Russia’s Defense Ministry said there were 199 cases of violating the agreement and that clashes escalated.

Moscow accused Washington and insurgent groups considered as moderate of failing to fulfil any obligation in the ceasefire reached in Geneva, Switzerland, on September 9. Moscow also criticized Washington for showing its doubts about Moscow’s cooperation.

US State Department spokesperson John Kirby said Washington will not establish a joint committee with Moscow to coordinate attacks on rebels in Syria until humanitarian aids are delivered to the besieged city of Aleppo and other areas.  AP news quoted a high-ranking military source as saying that on the one hand, the US sets conditions for coordination with Russia in Syria and on the other hand is secretly deploying special troops to the border area between Syria and Turkey, near Jarabulus and Al-Rai, which are hot spots in Aleppo’s conflicts.

Differences worsened on September 17, when the US-led coalition force bombed the Syrian army backed by Russia, leaving more than 60 soldiers dead and more than 100 injured. Moscow demanded an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council.  Maria Zakharova, a spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said she was worried about the US-led air strikes targeting the Syrian army, who is fighting against the IS. She said Russia demands a full and detailed explanation from Washington and these explanations must be given at the UN Security Council. US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power said Washington is investigating the airstrikes, which are not the US’ intention. The US army declared cessation of airstrikes near Deir al-Zor.

According to the Syrian state media, US-led coalition jets bombed a Syrian army position at Jebel Tharda near Deir al-Zor airport on Saturday, killing dozens of Syrian soldiers.

After one week of implementing the ceasefire, the results are not as good as expected by parties involved. This means a peace opportunity for Syria continues to be missed.
