(VOVWORLD) - STEM education, which promotes science, technology, engineering, and maths, has been chosen as the new general education approach in Vietnam. This method aims to stimulate independent thinking, creativity, problem solving, and students’ personal qualities. In recent years, STEM education has also contributed to national digital transformation.

In the 2021-2022 school year, the STEM education model was officially applied to grade 6 for the first time, and to grade 10 in the 2022-2023 school year.

Bringing STEM education to schools is part of the effort to promote innovation in general education. STEM targets comprehensive education, increasing interest in learning STEM subjects, developing students' abilities and qualities, and connecting schools with the community.

Nguyen Ngoc Dong Nhi, a pupil at My Khanh 1 Primary School in Can Tho city, said: "We feel excited, happy, and comfortable learning STEM. Here we work in a group and use colored pencils, tape, wool, strings, straws, and stickers to assemble a bridge.”

To make students, parents, and teachers comfortable with STEM methods, the education sector at all levels has diversified teaching activities.

The Hanoi University of Science and Technology recently held the 8th Vietnam STEM festival, where students, parents, and teachers joined various activities such as virtual reality, a car driving simulator, observing sunspots with telescopes, learning about the solar system through models, direct interaction with AI robots, controlling Mbot fighters, experiencing robot projects, and creating smart toys.

Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Le Xuan Dinh said: “This is a very meaningful event in the context of digital transformation and the 4th Industrial Revolution, which helps to improve the quality of human resources for science, technology, and innovation through innovative teaching and learning at the general education level. We want to raise public awareness about the role of science, technology, and innovation, especially young people when they are in school.”

Vietnam is building a new generation of creative, productive, and breakthrough human resources. STEM is one of the priority options, contributing to national digital transformation.
