(VOVworld)- Since the truce in Syria collapsed last week, bloody clashes have plunged Syria back into its humanitarian nightmare.

The Syrian army and its allies have regained control of the Palestinian Handarat refugee camp in northern Allepo. The camp plays a strategically important role because it is close to the Castillo highway which is the main route to northern Allepo, held by the opposition for several years. Control of the region will help the Syrian army resist the opposition, so regaining Allepo would be an important step forward for President Assad.

Allepo recently became the main battleground in Syria’s bloody civil war. Since the truce collapsed last week, the army has stepped up its attacks on the rebels to attempt to gain control of the outskirts of Allepo.

The international community is urgently working to forge a new truce in Syria. On September 25, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon urged world leaders to try harder to end the nightmare in Syria. His call was made at an extraordinary meeting of the UN Security Council to discuss the escalating conflict in Syria. At the meeting, the US and Russian representatives failed to find common ground. Russian Ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin said peace in Syria is virtually impossible at present. US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power said Russia’s actions in Syria are not aimed at fighting terrorism, but at helping the Syrian government to launch airstrikes against the rebels. Syria and Russia said the US and its allies were helping IS. Earlier, the US led coalition force launched airstrikes in the province of Deir Al Zour that killed more than 60 government soldiers and injured 98 others. The incident increased suspicions that the US is helping IS. US officials said the airstrike was a mistake but Russia said such a mistake was not credible.
