In Xom Lon hamlet, Nam Can commune, the family of Duong Thi Quyet, owner of the Ngoc Han shrimp cracker facility, is busy producing batch after batch for the Tet market. Mrs. Quyet said that almost all local people know how to make shrimp crackers.

In the past, whenever the Lunar New Year was near, local families would make shrimp crackers for their own Tet celebrations and as gifts for relatives. Thanks to the rich flavor derived from locally sourced shrimp, the product gradually gained popularity and the craft has grown steadily. On a normal day Quyet’s family produces about 30 kilograms, but during the Tet season, output rises to around 100 kilograms daily.

Ms Quyet said: “This craft helps stabilize our family’s livelihood. During Tet, especially the two months leading up to it, demand is very strong and prices are stable. Depending on customer orders, the higher the shrimp content, the higher the price is. This craft provides good income, so we can enjoy Tet comfortably.”

To meet seasonal demand, workers at Vinh Hoa Phat Shrimp Cracker Enterprise have increased shifts. Mai Sau, director of the facility, said Nam Can shrimp crackers stand out for their rich, savory taste, while production has expanded to an industrial scale.

Sau said: "Our shrimp crackers are favored for their bold flavor and tastiness. Our factory can now produce more than one ton per day, using a closed production process that is environmentally friendly. We prioritize quality above all else, because we don’t just serve the domestic market, we also export. Since 2019, we have been exporting to Taiwan (China) and several other countries.”

Currently, Nam Can commune has 28 traditional cracker facilities, providing jobs for approximately 200 workers. Annual output reaches nearly 1,000 tons, of which shrimp cracker account for the largest share, at 70%, according to Nguyen Hoang Duy, Deputy Head of the Commune’s Economic Division.

“Ahead of the Lunar New Year, the local shrimp cracker market has been very busy. This Tet consumption is estimated to surge 25-30% compared to the same period last year. Many local producers have signed supply contracts with distributors in major cities such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho, and other southern provinces. Prices remain stable, and overall supply has largely met market demand,” said Duy.

With the dedication of skilled artisans like Mrs. Quyet, the vision of business leaders like Mr. Mai Sau, and strong support from local authorities, the Nam Can shrimp cracker craft village is bringing residents a more prosperous Tet.
