(VOVworld) – G7 leaders met in Japan on Thursday to discuss coordinated actions to stimulate global growth, fight terrorism, and ensure maritime security. The 42nd G7 summit involves leaders from Britain, Canada, Germany, the US, Japan, France, and Italy.
The summit is taking place in the context of dwindling prospects, the slowing growth of emerging economies, the impacts of plummeting oil prices on fuel producers, and a possible Brexit.
According to Japanese officials, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and leaders of Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the US, and the EU will seek solutions to the situations in Syria and Ukraine, tax evasion, and the development of infrastructure to ensure sustainable growth.
Sources from the G7 said participants will deliver their objection to the building of artificial islands and the militarization of facilities in the East Sea. In a statement to be issued after the meeting, they will reject unilateral acts that might change the status quo and call for the peaceful settlement of maritime disputes in line with international law. G7 leaders will advocate full implementation of the UN resolution on sanctions against North Korea for its missile and nuclear weapons programs. They will also call on the world community to unite in the fight against the Islamic State in the Middle East.
Prior to the summit, on May 21, G7 Finance Ministers and Central Bank governors agreed to cooperate on resolving risks to the global economy. Finance officials pledged to continue efforts to combat tax evasion and prevent activities to finance terrorist organizations. But a number of differences remain because some countries, including Germany, are hesitant to increase government spending.
The G7 summit, held in Japan for the first time in 8 years, is taking place with security tightened to the highest level following a series of IS terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels.
