(VOVWORLD) - Over the past 2 weeks, Vietnam’s central region has suffered from three storms and two tropical depressions. Prolonged downpours and water released from hydropower plants have inundated several localities. In recent years many flood prevention models have been applied nationwide.

Two of the more effective models are floating houses in Quang Binh province and flood-resistant houses with entresols in Quang Nam province.

Dao Trong Tu, Director of the Center for Sustainable Water Resource Development and Climate Change Adaptation, said: “The houses should be built close to dense population areas where people can quickly run to seek shelter. Families build houses with firm entresols where they can stay and keep necessary goods.”

The 7th storm of this year is forecast to bring heavy rain to the northern and northern central region with the current flooding, early warning is important to ensure safety for the people.

“Because climate change is causing more unusual weather events, we should improve weather forecasts and send early warnings to people to evacuate flood zones. Early warning is very important for people to get prepared,” Tu said.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has introduced a Disaster Management Reference Handbook with detailed instructions for each disaster level. The Ministry will organize training courses on natural disaster mitigation.
