(VOVWORLD) -  The Vietnam e-Commerce and Digital Economy Agency under the Ministry of Industry and Trade and Amazon Global Selling Vietnam on Wednesday launched a cross-border e-commerce initiative intended to help Vietnam develop a workforce for this kind of commerce in the next five years.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Sinh Nhat Tan said that last year, Vietnam earned 13.7 billion USD from online retail sales, up 16%.  Online sales are expected to reach 35 billion USD by 2025, an annual growth rate of 25%. Accelerating digital transformation in import and export has reduced the workload and streamlined administrative procedures and public services.

The new initiative will help local firms transform digitally, become better informed about export-import markets, and establish Vietnamese brands in the global market. Mr. Tan says: "In addition to boosting import and export and expanding the market, cross-border e-commerce has posed several challenges. Vietnamese businesses still lack information and have not prepared sufficiently to meet foreign customers’ needs. They do not have the skills and business plans needed to protect their brands in cross-border e-commerce. We hope this initiative will help them transform digitally and become better informed."

Gijae Seong, head of Amazon Global Selling Vietnam, said the initiative aims to help 10,000 Vietnamese enterprises with personnel development in e-commerce during the 2022-2025 period.

The 5-year initiative will organize online and in-person training courses in Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, and several other localities this year.

According to Amazon Global Selling, Vietnam’s cross-border retail sales are increasing 20% annually, earned 3.3 billion USD last year, and is projected to fetch 12 billion USD by 2026.
