There are different definitions about cultural values. Vietnamese culture is comprised of all cultural values in all aspects ranging from culture, politics, economics to society that have been accumulated by Vietnamese people over generations. This value system has been adjusted and influenced by people’s lifestyles. Sometimes it changes to suit the new context. Traditional cultural values have been preserved and promoted as the foundation for the creation of new cultural values, which are also being influenced by human cultural quintessence. The cultural exchanges between nations have enriched Vietnamese cultural identities. Cultural Researcher Professor Ngo Duc Thinh says: “Our principle is to protect, continue and enrich our tradition while at the same time engage with the rest of the world. Active engagement must occur simultaneously with the protection and promotion of our traditions. Isolating ourselves will make us stagnant, become dated and disconnected with modern developments. The world is diverse and our culture has much to offer.”

In the history of preserving and developing cultural tradition, Vietnam has always showed its firm stance against being diluted by other cultures. In the context of rapid integration, the cultural life in Vietnam is facing major challenges. Critic Ngo Thao says: "Vietnamese authors need to have profound knowledge about Vietnamese tradition and know to preserve and promote them. With this foundation and knowledge about world culture, they will create completely new works that are still imbued with Vietnamese soul and spirit”.

The world is developing rapidly and so is culture. Exposure to other cultures rapidly influences the young generation continuously. Vietnamese policy makers and researchers are concerned about young people’s ideology about culture. Professor Ngo Duc Thinh says:“The future of culture depends on the young generation. So, proposals on culture should focus on young people, the future generation of the country. It’s important to raise their awareness about the values and means to protect heritage and tradition in this dynamic era because they are the masters of this process. I think we should focus on patiently preserving and promoting the tradition and actively integrating into world culture”.

Tuan says:“Preserving and promoting national cultural identity through building, fostering and maintaining the cultural value system is very crucial for every nation. This creates the difference and the stance of society for that value system to exist. Based on a foundation of tradition, traditional cultural values have been preserved and promoted until creating new cultural values the contemporary life”.Amidst fast changing society and influence by the influx of world cultures, traditional cultural values are constantly preserved and promoted making Vietnamese culture a pride of Vietnamese people.
